Target intelligence / Profile preview
Human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation is a fundamental biological process involving the replication of endothelial cells, which line the interior surface of blood vessels. It is not a single molecular target but rather a complex cellular response regulated by various growth factors, most notably Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) (PubMed: 15134354). In oncology, HUVEC proliferation assays are widely used to screen for anti-angiogenic drugs that inhibit tumor vascularization, such as Bevacizumab or Sunitinib (NIH: PMC2822454). In cardiovascular research, this process is studied to understand re-endothelialization after vascular injury or stent placement. Because it encompasses an entire physiological pathway rather than a specific protein, it is considered a phenotypic readout or biological process in pharmacological contexts. Consequently, drugs "targeting" HUVEC proliferation actually interact with specific upstream receptors or intracellular signaling molecules like VEGFR2 or MAPK.
Inhibition of pro-angiogenic signaling pathways, primarily the VEGF/VEGFR axis, which triggers the intracellular cascades necessary for endothelial cell cycle progression and division (PubMed: 15134354).
