Overview

Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) are primary cells derived from the endothelium of veins within the human umbilical cord (ATCC, 2023). They serve as a foundational model system in biomedical research for studying vascular biology, including angiogenesis, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses (PubMed, PMC3135221). Although HUVECs are frequently used to screen drug candidates and investigate molecular pathways, they represent a complex cellular system rather than a single molecular target or receptor (Thermo Fisher Scientific, 2024). In the context of disease, HUVECs are utilized to model conditions such as atherosclerosis, diabetes-related vascular dysfunction, and tumor-induced blood vessel formation (Nature, 2020). Drugs are often tested on these cells to evaluate their impact on endothelial health or their ability to inhibit pathological signaling (ScienceDirect, 2022). As primary cells, HUVECs offer high physiological relevance but are characterized by a limited proliferative capacity and potential donor-to-donor variability (Lonza, 2023).
