Target intelligence / Profile preview
Humoral immune response stimulation refers to the physiological process of activating the antibody-mediated arm of the adaptive immune system (Janeway et al., 2001). This process primarily involves the recognition of antigens by B cells, their subsequent activation (often with T-cell help), and their differentiation into antibody-secreting plasma cells and memory B cells (StatPearls, 2023). These secreted antibodies serve to neutralize toxins, opsonize pathogens for phagocytosis, and activate the complement cascade (NIH, 2022). In medicine, stimulating this response is the fundamental goal of most prophylactic vaccines and certain immunotherapies used to treat chronic infections or malignancies. However, it is important to note that 'Humoral immune response stimulation' is a descriptive term for a biological outcome or therapeutic effect rather than a specific molecular target like a single receptor or enzyme. Consequently, pharmacological agents that achieve this effect act upon a variety of discrete molecular targets, such as Toll-like receptors or cytokine receptors, to initiate the signaling pathways required for B-cell maturation.
Induction of B-lymphocyte proliferation and differentiation into plasma cells, which secrete high-affinity antibodies (IgG, IgA, IgM) into the systemic circulation and mucosal surfaces to neutralize pathogens (Murphy & Weaver, 2016).
