Chondroprotection by hyaluronic acid (HA) describes the protective effects of HA on cartilage and chondrocytes, particularly in the context of osteoarthritis. HA, a major component of synovial fluid and cartilage, exerts its effects through both physical mechanisms (lubrication and shock absorption) and biological mechanisms (receptor-mediated signaling to reduce inflammation and promote cartilage matrix synthesis).
Primarily involves interaction with cell surface receptors such as CD44, leading to downstream effects like reduced inflammation, inhibition of matrix degradation, and promotion of chondrocyte survival and matrix synthesis. Also acts via visco-supplementation.
