Hyaluronic acid-based products for vaginal use target CD44 (hyaluronic acid receptor) on the vaginal mucosa, facilitating moisture retention through formation of a hydrated extracellular matrix. The products adhere to the mucosal surface (mucoadhesion), allowing sustained local hydration, enhanced mucosal repair, and tissue remodeling. Expression of CD44 and aquaporin 3 (AQP3) are critical for optimizing hydration and cellular water transport.
