Hyaluronic acid replacements are alternative molecules or ingredients used in place of hyaluronic acid (HA) for similar biological or cosmetic functions, primarily hydration, skin plumping, and tissue lubrication. Common replacements include polyglutamic acid (PGA), glycerin, panthenol (Pro-vitamin B5), snow mushroom extract, ceramides, squalane/squalene, birch sap, and oat silk. They function as humectants and/or occlusives, attracting moisture and/or preventing water loss from the skin. They are used in moisturizers, serums, and sometimes fillers/injectables, offering benefits like improved barrier protection, reduced allergic risk, or plant-based sourcing.
Humectant: Attracts water into the stratum corneum. Occlusive: Forms a film/barrier on the surface to prevent transepidermal water loss. Emollient: Softens and soothes the skin.
