Overview

Hyaluronic acid (HA) synthesis is the process of producing the linear glycosaminoglycan HA, a major component of the extracellular matrix. It involves the coordinated action of multiple enzymes, primarily hyaluronan synthases (HAS1, HAS2, HAS3), which polymerize UDP-glucuronic acid (UDP-GlcUA) and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) into HA. These precursors are derived from glucose through complex metabolic pathways. HA synthesis is crucial for maintaining tissue hydration, elasticity, and facilitating cell migration and proliferation. It is also a therapeutic target for various conditions, including cancer and inflammatory diseases.
