Hyaluronidase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Glycosidase, Endoglycosidase
01

Overview

Hyaluronidase refers to a family of enzymes that catalyze the degradation of hyaluronic acid, a major component of the extracellular matrix. By breaking down hyaluronic acid, these enzymes reduce the viscosity of extracellular fluids and increase tissue permeability. Different isoforms (HYAL1-5) exist with distinct tissue distributions and functions, including roles in drug absorption, fertilization, and cancer progression. Marketed forms include recombinant human hyaluronidase used for improving drug dispersion during injections or managing complications from dermal fillers.
