Overview

Hydrogen ions (H+), commonly referred to as protons, are fundamental cations that determine the pH of biological fluids and are critical for physiological homeostasis. In the stomach, H+ is a primary component of gastric acid, secreted by parietal cells to facilitate protein digestion and provide an antimicrobial barrier (StatPearls, 2023). In systemic circulation and the renal system, the concentration of H+ is tightly regulated to maintain a blood pH of approximately 7.4, which is essential for proper enzyme function and metabolic processes (NIH, 2022). Pathological deviations in H+ concentration lead to conditions such as metabolic acidosis, alkalosis, and peptic ulcer disease. Pharmacological interventions include antacids, which directly neutralize H+ ions, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which decrease H+ secretion by targeting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (PubChem, 2024). Monitoring H+ levels through pH measurement in blood and urine is a vital diagnostic tool for assessing respiratory, metabolic, and renal health.
