Overview

Toxic hydrophobic bile acids are a subset of bile acids characterized by their high hydrophobicity, which directly correlates with their cytotoxic potential. These molecules are derived from cholesterol in the liver and further modified by intestinal bacteria. Examples include Deoxycholic acid (DCA), Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), and Lithocholic acid (LCA). When present in excess or improperly processed/conjugated, they become cytotoxic, especially to hepatocytes, by disrupting cell membranes, inducing endoplasmic reticulum stress, and triggering apoptosis or necrosis. The body mitigates toxicity through sulfation and conjugation with glycine/taurine.
