HSD3BP4 is a putative pseudogene in the human genome, related by sequence to the family of functional 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/Δ5-4 isomerases. These enzymes are crucial for steroid hormone biosynthesis, including production of progesterone, androgens, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and estrogens. However, as a pseudogene, HSD3BP4 is not known to produce a functional protein and has no established enzymatic or regulatory role in steroidogenesis or any disease processes. The canonical, functional enzymes in this family are encoded by HSD3B1 and HSD3B2, both of which are essential in hormone biosynthesis pathways[1][2][3].
