This process detoxifies methylglyoxal, a reactive glycolytic by-product linked to advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation and cellular damage[1][3]. HAGH is expressed as both cytosolic and mitochondrial isoforms, ensuring detoxification in different cellular compartments[2].
