Hydroxypropyl guar polymer chain

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, chemically modified biopolymer, industrial excipient
01

Overview

Hydroxypropyl guar polymer chain is a synthetic derivative of guar gum, a natural polysaccharide (galactomannan) extracted from the seeds of *Cyamopsis tetragonoloba* (guar plant). The structure consists of a backbone of β-(1→4)-linked D-mannopyranosyl units, with side chains of α-(1→6)-linked D-galactopyranosyl residues, and is further chemically modified through hydroxypropylation (introduction of propylene glycol ether groups) at some of the hydroxyl sites[2][3]. This chemical modification markedly enhances water solubility, viscosity, and stability properties compared to native guar gum, enabling its use across industrial sectors such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and oilfield applications as a thickener, stabilizer, and binder[4][6]. Hydroxypropyl guar is not associated with direct biological activities in human physiology or pathology, and is not considered a therapeutic biochemical target[2][4].
