Hydroxysteroid 11-beta-dehydrogenase 1-like protein (HSD11B1L)

Target
HSD11B1L
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) family
01

Overview

Hydroxysteroid 11-beta-dehydrogenase 1-like protein (HSD11B1L) is an enzyme belonging to the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily. It catalyzes the interconversion of inactive to active glucocorticoids, resembling the enzymatic function of HSD11B1, which is involved in cortisol and cortisone metabolism. HSD11B1L is mainly present in humans and certain other higher organisms, but is absent in rodent genomes. Mutations in or dysregulation of HSD11B1L may be implicated in cortisone reductase deficiency and possibly other steroid-related disorders. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms of the protein. Its status as a therapeutic target is suggested by its role in steroid metabolism, but no drugs are directly identified as targeting HSD11B1L to date

Mechanism of action

Drugs targeting this molecule would likely act by modulating glucocorticoid activation/inactivation, but no specific mechanisms are described for HSD11B1L

03

Biological functions

Catalyzes interconversion of inactive to active glucocorticoids (e.g., cortisone to cortisol)Possible role in steroid hormone metabolism
04

Disease associations

Cortisone reductase deficiencyOther potential roles in steroid-related metabolic and endocrine disorders
05

Safety considerations

Notable safety concerns are not specifically documented; theoretical concerns may relate to effects on steroid hormone balance
06

Interacting drugs

No direct interacting drugs are currently listed in the search results; knowledge of related family members (HSD11B1) suggests potential for interaction with glucocorticoid-modifying agents, but evidence for HSD11B1L itself is lacking
07

Biomarkers

No validated biomarkers for patient selection or efficacy monitoring are reported for HSD11B1L
