Hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 1 (HSD17B1) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in steroid hormone metabolism, particularly in the regulation of sex steroid potency. It converts estrone (E1), a weak estrogen, into estradiol (E2), a highly potent estrogen, and reduces androstenedione to testosterone. HSD17B1 is primarily expressed in the placenta and ovary, and elevated expression or activity has been linked with increased local production of estradiol within tissues such as breast tissue, potentially promoting the proliferation of breast cancer cells. It functions as a homodimer and uses NADPH as a cofactor.
