Overview

Hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 6 is an NAD+-dependent oxidoreductase and epimerase involved in androgen catabolism, notably catalyzing the conversion of 3 alpha-adiol to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and androsterone to epi-androsterone. It is a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family and also displays retinol dehydrogenase activity[4][5]. HSD17B6 regulates steroid hormone levels and has increasingly recognized roles in cancer biology, particularly as a tumor suppressor in lung adenocarcinoma, inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Suppression of HSD17B6 in tumors correlates with poor prognosis and aggressive disease. Its function suggests potential as a prognostic biomarker and future therapeutic target[2][4][5].
