Target intelligence / Profile preview
Hypericum laricifolium Juss. essential oil is a complex mixture of volatile secondary metabolites extracted from the aerial parts of a shrub native to the Andean regions of South America, such as Peru and Ecuador (Valarezo et al., 2021). The oil is primarily composed of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, with major constituents often including alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and limonene. Pharmacological evaluations have demonstrated that this oil possesses significant antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and various fungal strains, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities (Cuesta et al., 2017; PubMed). Because it is a multi-component natural extract rather than a single protein or nucleic acid, it is categorized as a therapeutic agent or drug candidate rather than a discrete molecular target or receptor. Consequently, it acts through synergistic effects on various biological pathways rather than a singular high-affinity interaction with a specific binding site.
As a multi-component essential oil, it functions by disrupting microbial cell membranes, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and potentially modulating inflammatory cytokine expression; it does not have a single mechanism of action tied to a specific receptor.
