The If channel—also known as the "funny current" or "pacemaker" current—is a hyperpolarization‐activated, cyclic nucleotide–gated ion channel primarily found in the sinoatrial node of the heart. It is responsible for generating and regulating spontaneous electrical activity that determines the pace of cardiac rhythm. The If current is carried mainly by sodium and potassium ions and activates upon hyperpolarization, contributing to diastolic depolarization in pacemaker cells. Modulation by cyclic nucleotides such as cAMP links autonomic nervous system input to changes in heart rate. Pharmacologically, drugs like ivabradine selectively inhibit this current to lower resting heart rate without affecting other aspects of cardiac conduction or contractility. This makes it a therapeutic target for conditions such as chronic stable angina and certain types of tachycardia. Excessive inhibition can lead to bradycardia—a notable safety concern. While closely related structurally to inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir), If channels are more accurately classified within the HCN family due to their unique activation properties and physiological roles.
