Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

Target
HOCl
Molecular classification
Oxidizing agent, Antimicrobial agent
01

Overview

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak, unstable acid and a powerful oxidizing agent with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It is produced by neutrophils as part of the immune response and is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores, and biofilms. It disrupts microbial cell membranes, damages DNA and proteins, and inhibits essential enzymes. HOCl is used in wound care, ophthalmology, and dermatology due to its efficacy and safety profile.
