Hypotension

01

Overview

Hypotension is a physiological state or clinical condition characterized by abnormally low blood pressure, generally defined as a reading lower than 90/60 mmHg (StatPearls, 2023). It is not a single molecular target, receptor, or enzyme, but rather a hemodynamic manifestation of underlying issues such as decreased blood volume, heart failure, or excessive vasodilation (Mayo Clinic, 2023). In a clinical context, hypotension leads to inadequate perfusion of vital organs, which can result in shock, organ failure, or syncope. While it is not a drug target itself, many therapeutic agents are designed to resolve hypotension by acting on physiological targets like the alpha-adrenergic receptors or the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (NIH, 2022). For drug discovery and biotech analysis, hypotension is categorized as an indication or a side effect rather than a specific protein or biological entity (PubMed, 2021).

Mechanism of action

Hypotension is a clinical condition or symptom rather than a molecular target. Pharmacological management involves targeting various receptors and enzymes to increase systemic vascular resistance or cardiac output. Common mechanisms include agonism of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors to induce vasoconstriction, activation of vasopressin receptors (V1a), and mineralocorticoid receptor stimulation to increase blood volume (StatPearls, 2023; NIH, 2022).
