The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is a complex neuroendocrine system that regulates reproductive function and the development of secondary sexual characteristics in both males and females. It consists of the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary gland, and gonads (ovaries or testes). The hypothalamus releases GnRH, stimulating the pituitary to secrete LH and FSH, which act on the gonads to produce sex steroids and regulate gametogenesis. Feedback loops involving sex steroids maintain hormonal balance. Dysfunction can result in various reproductive disorders.
