Hypothalamus

Molecular classification
Brain Region, Regulatory Center
01

Overview

The hypothalamus is a small but critical region of the brain located at its base near the pituitary gland. It serves as a major link between the nervous and endocrine systems, playing an essential role in maintaining homeostasis—the body's internal balance. It controls numerous vital bodily functions including body temperature, hunger/appetite, thirst, sexual behavior/libido, emotional responses/mood, circadian rhythms, heart rate, blood pressure, and hormone release from many glands, especially through its influence on the pituitary gland. Dysfunction can result from genetic causes, infection/inflammation, trauma, surgery, or radiation, leading to a wide range of symptoms related to growth, metabolism, stress response, reproduction, sleep-wake cycles, and mood.

02

Mechanism of action

The hypothalamus exerts its influence through the release of hormones that regulate the pituitary gland, and through direct neural connections to the autonomic nervous system. Drugs can target specific hypothalamic nuclei or hormone receptors to modulate its functions.
