Overview

Systemic tissue hypoxia is a medical condition characterized by an inadequate supply of oxygen to tissues throughout the body, which can result from causes such as hypoxemia (low oxygen in blood), anemia (low oxygen-carrying capacity), circulatory failure (impaired oxygen delivery), or inability of tissues to utilize oxygen (histotoxic hypoxia). It triggers adaptive and pathological cellular processes, including a shift toward anaerobic metabolism, increased lactate production, and upregulation of hypoxia-inducible factors, leading to sustained physiological and sometimes pathological responses. Systemic hypoxia is central to the pathophysiology of many acute and chronic diseases, notably in critical care, cardiovascular dysfunction, cancer progression, and chronic respiratory diseases.

Mechanism of action

Approaches are supportive and mechanism may involve improving oxygen delivery (supplemental oxygen, increasing cardiac output), increasing blood oxygen carrying capacity (blood transfusion), or treating the underlying cause (e.g., antibiotics, antitoxins, anticoagulants)
