Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1 (HIF-1)

Target
HIF-1
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, bHLH-PAS protein
01

Overview

Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1 (HIF-1) is a heterodimeric transcription factor that plays a central role in cellular adaptation to low oxygen (hypoxic) conditions. It regulates the expression of numerous genes involved in oxygen homeostasis, angiogenesis, metabolism, and cell survival. HIF-1 is composed of an oxygen-sensitive alpha subunit and a constitutively expressed beta subunit. Under hypoxia, the alpha subunit is stabilized and translocates to the nucleus to activate transcription of target genes. It is an important drug target for cancer therapy.
