HIF1A encodes the alpha subunit of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), a heterodimeric transcription factor that is the master regulator of cellular and developmental responses to low oxygen (hypoxic) conditions. Under hypoxic conditions, HIF-1α stabilizes, translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes with ARNT (HIF-1β), and binds DNA at hypoxia response elements to activate transcription of genes involved in energy metabolism, angiogenesis, apoptosis, oxygen delivery and metabolic adaptation. Plays essential roles in embryonic vascularization, tumor angiogenesis, ischemic disease pathophysiology, placental development during gestation, and neuronal mitochondrial transport under hypoxia.
