Hypoxic Tumor Cells

Molecular classification
Cellular Subpopulation, Tumor Microenvironment Component
01

Overview

Hypoxic tumor cells are cancer cells that exist in regions of a solid tumor where oxygen levels are significantly lower than those found in normal tissues. This hypoxia arises because tumors often outgrow their blood supply, leading to areas with poor oxygenation. These cells exhibit adaptations like activation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), increased glycolysis, and altered pH regulation. Hypoxia contributes to increased tumor aggressiveness, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, making hypoxic tumor cells a key target for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
