IκB kinase epsilon (IKKε) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that plays a central role in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses, particularly in antiviral defense mechanisms. It is essential for activating type I interferon (IFN), NF-kappa-B, and STAT signaling pathways. IKKε phosphorylates key transcription factors such as IRF3 and IRF7, leading to the induction of pro-inflammatory/antiviral genes. Additionally, it plays a role in energy balance regulation and protects cells against DNA damage-induced cell death. It is considered a therapeutic target due to its roles in both innate immunity/inflammation and tumorigenesis.
