Ichthammol, also known as ammonium bituminosulfonate, is a complex mixture derived from the distillation of sulfur-rich oil shale, followed by sulfonation and neutralization with ammonia (PubChem CID 167500). It is not a specific biological target like a receptor or enzyme, but is instead a therapeutic agent used in the treatment of various dermatological conditions (StatPearls). The substance is characterized by its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and keratolytic effects, which are beneficial in managing eczema, psoriasis, and localized skin infections such as boils (Gayko et al., 2000). Its primary mechanism involves the inhibition of leukocyte migration and the suppression of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, thereby reducing inflammatory mediators (PubMed: 11130313). Additionally, its high sulfur content contributes to its bactericidal and fungicidal activity against various skin pathogens. Due to its multi-component nature, it provides a broad therapeutic profile but lacks a single, well-defined molecular target for drug discovery purposes.
Ichthammol acts by inhibiting the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase, which leads to a reduction in the production of leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a potent mediator of inflammation (Gayko et al., 2000). It also exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and certain fungi, and possesses keratolytic properties that help soften the skin's outer layer (PubChem CID 167500).
