Overview

IFITM3 pseudogene 3 (IFITM3P3) is one of several human IFITM3-derived pseudogenes. IFITM pseudogenes like IFITM3P3 have arisen from gene duplication and may contain promoter motifs similar to their parental genes, leading to their induction by interferon signaling[3]. While some IFITM pseudogenes show evidence of long non-coding RNA activity or have intact open reading frames, the function of IFITM3P3 is currently uncharacterized[3]. IFITM proteins are well known for their role in blocking viral entry, but there is no evidence that IFITM3P3 encodes a functional protein or has specific biological, disease, or pharmacological roles. Recent transcriptome analyses suggest pseudogenes like IFITM3P3 may be upregulated during antiviral responses, but their precise molecular function remains unknown[3].
