Overview

IFITM3 pseudogene 5 (IFITM3P5) is one of several pseudogenes related to the interferon-induced transmembrane protein family in the human genome[3]. Pseudogenes are genomic sequences similar to known genes but generally considered non-functional due to disabling mutations or the absence of essential regulatory elements. While some IFITM pseudogenes, such as IFITM4P, have been shown to participate in RNA-based regulatory activities, the specific function of IFITM3P5 is uncharacterized. IFITM3P5 contains an intact open reading frame, suggesting the theoretical potential for protein expression; however, there is no evidence that it encodes a functional protein, nor is there evidence linking it directly to any biological process, disease, or therapeutic mechanism[3]. Its inclusion in certain antiviral transcriptomic responses suggests possible regulation at the RNA level but does not designate it as a therapeutically actionable target. Note: IFITM3P5 is fundamentally different from IFITM3, the functional gene encoding the interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3, which participates in antiviral defense and cancer biology. Only the true IFITM3 gene, not its pseudogenes, is associated with validated molecular and biological roles relevant to therapeutic targeting[1][3][5].
