IFITM pseudogenes are typically classified as non-protein-coding regions of the genome and may sometimes act as long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) with regulatory functions. While other IFITM pseudogenes such as IFITM4P have demonstrated functionality as lncRNAs that regulate immune parental genes (e.g., IFITM1, IFITM2, IFITM3), the precise function, structure, or expression pattern of IFITM3P6 remains uncharacterized[1]. Notably, IFITM3P6 has been identified in gene expression signatures associated with antiviral immune responses in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection, but there is no evidence that it encodes a functional protein or serves as a therapeutic target[1].
