Overview

IGBP1 antisense RNA 1 (IGBP1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the IGBP1 locus on chromosome X (Xq13.1). It is classified as a non-coding RNA with very low protein-coding potential. Functionally, IGBP1-AS1 has been shown to inhibit proliferation and invasion of breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, enhance apoptosis, and act as a tumor suppressor in these contexts. Mechanistically, it regulates a feedback loop involving miR-24-1 and the transcription factor ZIC3, serving as an RNA sponge for miR-24-1, which in turn upregulates ZIC3, with ZIC3 further activating IGBP1-AS1 expression. Downregulation of IGBP1-AS1 is associated with reduced overall and progression-free survival in breast cancer patients, indicating its potential as a prognostic biomarker, although its disease and mechanistic roles outside cancer remain largely undefined. There are currently no known direct drug interactions, and it is not considered a direct therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
