Overview

IL12A antisense RNA 1 (IL12A-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed antisense to the IL12A gene. Variants in IL12A-AS1 have been associated with increased risk of Behçet’s disease in genome-wide association studies, implicating it as a genetic regulator in inflammatory and immune pathways[1]. Antisense long noncoding RNAs in general, including IL12A-AS1, are thought to participate in the fine-tuning of gene expression—for instance, by modulating the expression of neighboring coding genes such as IL12A, potentially affecting cytokine and chemokine signaling in immune cells[1][3]. Recent studies suggest broader immunomodulatory roles for this type of RNA, especially in the context of infection and inflammation. However, IL12A-AS1 itself is not currently a known direct drug target, biomarker, or therapeutic target. IL12A-AS1 is not a classic therapeutic target as defined for proteins (receptors, enzymes, etc.), and there are no approved drugs or direct clinical programs targeting this RNA directly as of the latest data. There is no obvious misspelling or error in the entity requested. However, it is important to distinguish IL12A-AS1 (the lncRNA) from IL12A (the protein-coding gene for interleukin-12 subunit alpha), as the latter is a well-established immunological target and cytokine, whereas IL12A-AS1 is a regulatory noncoding RNA with associations to disease susceptibility[1][8].
