Imaging contrast enhancement via iodine absorption is a technique used in x-ray based imaging modalities such as CT and radiography to improve the visualization of internal structures. Iodinated compounds, acting as contrast agents, are administered to the patient. Due to iodine's high atomic number, it strongly absorbs x-rays, leading to increased attenuation in tissues where it is present. This differential attenuation enhances contrast between iodine-containing regions (e.g., blood vessels, tumors) and surrounding tissues. This allows for improved detection and characterization of various diseases. Adverse effects include allergic reactions and nephrotoxicity.
Increased photoelectric effect due to high atomic number of iodine, enhancing x-ray attenuation in targeted tissues or vessels. The k-edge of iodine is close to the energy of diagnostic X-rays, maximizing absorption and contrast.
