Imatinib-upregulated long noncoding RNA 1 (IUR1) is a long noncoding RNA found between the P2Y2 receptor and FCHSD2 genes on human chromosome 11, with homologous sequences in mouse. IUR1 is expressed at very low levels in Bcr-Abl-positive leukemia cells but is highly induced by imatinib treatment. Functional studies demonstrate that IUR1 suppresses Bcr-Abl-induced tumorigenesis by attenuating STAT5-mediated GATA3 expression, thus promoting apoptosis and restricting tumor growth. Loss of IUR1 increases cell survival and disease progression in mouse and human leukemia models. While not a conventional drug target like a receptor or enzyme, IUR1 is functionally significant as a negative regulator and may act as a biomarker or future therapeutic modulator in Bcr-Abl-positive leukemias[1][2].
