The imidazole ring is an aromatic, five-membered, heterocyclic structure in which nitrogens occupy the 1 and 3 positions. Its amphoteric nature allows it to act as both a weak acid and a weak base, facilitating proton transfer in enzymatic processes. The ring is present in many biologically essential molecules such as histidine and histamine, and forms coordination complexes in metalloproteins. Mechanism of action
