The imidazoline receptor type 1 (I1) is a subtype of the imidazoline receptor family involved in the inhibition of sympathetic nervous system activity and blood pressure regulation. It is primarily located in the brainstem and other peripheral tissues and mediates the antihypertensive effects of certain drugs like clonidine and moxonidine. Research is ongoing to further elucidate its structure, signaling pathways, and therapeutic potential.
Activation of I1 receptors leads to inhibition of sympathetic outflow via central sites like the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), resulting in lowered blood pressure. It also involves the production of second messengers like diacylglycerol and modulation through G protein-coupled mechanisms.
