Overview
Immediate early protein 1 (IE1) is a key regulatory protein of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). It is expressed immediately after infection and functions as a transcriptional regulator, modulating viral and host gene expression to promote viral replication. IE1 disrupts PML nuclear bodies (PML-NBs) to antagonize host antiviral defenses and directly binds core histones, influencing chromatin structure. It is essential for initiating productive HCMV infection.
