Overview

Immune and glial cell populations represent a complex network of cells responsible for maintaining the physiological integrity of the central nervous system (CNS) and executing immune surveillance. Glial cells, which include astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, provide essential metabolic support, regulate the blood-brain barrier, and manage synaptic connectivity (Purves et al., Neuroscience, 2018). Microglia serve as the resident macrophages of the brain, constantly sensing the environment for pathogens or cellular debris (Colonna & Butovsky, 2017, PMID: 28249153). In pathological conditions, peripheral immune cells such as T-cells and macrophages can infiltrate the CNS, interacting with glia to drive neuroinflammatory processes (Heneka et al., 2015, PMID: 25768906). While these populations are vital for CNS health, their chronic activation is a primary driver of neurodegeneration in diseases like Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis (Sofroniew & Vinters, 2010, PMID: 20012068). Because this term describes a heterogeneous group of cells rather than a single protein or receptor, it is classified as a biological system or population rather than a discrete therapeutic target.
