Overview

Immune balance, or immune homeostasis, represents the physiological equilibrium between the activation and suppression of the immune system (NIH, 2021). It is not a discrete molecular target, such as a receptor or enzyme, but a complex systemic condition maintained by the coordinated action of various immune cells, such as regulatory T cells, and signaling molecules like cytokines (PubMed, 2020). In a healthy state, the immune system effectively identifies and eliminates pathogens while maintaining self-tolerance to prevent host tissue damage (StatPearls, 2023). Disruptions in this balance are central to the pathogenesis of numerous conditions; for instance, an overactive response leads to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, while an underactive response can facilitate cancer progression or chronic infection (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2021). Therapeutic strategies in immunology aim to restore this balance by modulating specific molecular components, such as cytokines (e.g., TNF-alpha) or intracellular signaling pathways (e.g., JAK/STAT) (PubMed, 2022). Consequently, while achieving immune balance is a primary therapeutic goal, the term itself describes a biological outcome rather than a specific protein or gene product (UniProt, 2024).
