01

Overview

Immune cells of the oral mucosa comprise an anatomically and functionally diverse group, including T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, neutrophils, mast cells, and others. They function in pathogen defense, tolerance to commensal microbiota and food antigens, antigen presentation, cytokine secretion, and maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Specialized subpopulations inhabit distinct niches, such as the epithelial layers, lamina propria, mucosal lymphoid tissues, and salivary glands. Dysregulation of these cells underlies oral pathologies such as chronic inflammation, autoimmunity, and tumorigenesis.
