Overview

Immune cell receptors are a vast and diverse class of proteins located on the surface or within the compartments of immune cells that facilitate the detection of and response to internal and external stimuli. This broad category encompasses several distinct families, including pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) like Toll-like receptors, antigen-specific receptors such as T-cell receptors (TCRs) and B-cell receptors (BCRs), and various cytokine and chemokine receptors. These molecules are fundamental to the coordination of the innate and adaptive immune systems, governing processes such as cell activation, migration, and effector functions. In clinical medicine, specific immune receptors serve as critical therapeutic targets; for instance, immune checkpoint receptors like PD-1 and CTAC-4 are targeted by monoclonal antibodies to enhance anti-tumor immunity in oncology. Because the term refers to a functional category rather than a single molecular entity, it is considered too broad for specific drug-target annotation.
