Immune cell recruitment via chemokine induction at injection site

Molecular classification
Chemokines, Cytokines, Immune cell recruitment, Adjuvant mechanism
01

Overview

The process by which the vaccine adjuvant MF59 induces local chemokine production at the injection site, leading to recruitment of various immune cells. This mechanism is central to how MF59 enhances immune responses when used in vaccines, promoting antigen uptake/presentation and robust adaptive immunity. Key chemokines involved include CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CXCL9 and CXCL10 which attract monocytes and dendritic cells.

Mechanism of action

MF59 induces local chemokine production at the injection site, leading to recruitment of monocytes, dendritic cells, neutrophils, and other antigen-presenting cells (APCs). These APCs take up antigen/adjuvant complexes and migrate to draining lymph nodes, enhancing antigen presentation and stimulating adaptive immune responses.
