Immune competence

Immune competence, or immunocompetence, is a physiological state characterizing the ability of an organism's immune system to recognize antigens and mount a normal, effective immune response. It is not a specific molecular target (such as a receptor or enzyme) but rather a systemic condition resulting from the integrated function of various immune cells, including T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells, along with their signaling pathways [1]. The assessment of immune competence is critical in clinical settings to determine a patient's vulnerability to opportunistic infections or their potential response to vaccinations and immunotherapies [2].
