Immune effector cells, such as NK cells, macrophages, and neutrophils, are regulated through their expression of Fc receptors (FcRs). These receptors bind to the Fc region of antibodies bound to target antigens, triggering immune effector functions like phagocytosis, ADCC, and cytokine release. Modulation of FcR interactions, through protein engineering or glycoengineering of antibodies, is a key strategy for enhancing cancer immunotherapy or reducing unwanted inflammation.
