Immune effector T cells are a subset of T lymphocytes that play a central role in the adaptive immune response. They arise from naïve T cells after encountering their specific antigen and receiving co-stimulatory signals. Effector T cells differentiate into cytotoxic (CD8+), helper (CD4+), or regulatory subsets, each with specialized functions aimed at eliminating pathogens, infected or malignant cells, and modulating the immune system. Their activation requires antigen recognition via the T cell receptor (TCR), co-stimulation, and cytokine signaling. They are crucial for clearing infections and cancers but must be tightly regulated to prevent autoimmunity. Effector T cells are therapeutically harnessed in adoptive cellular therapies such as CAR-T treatments.
