Target intelligence / Profile preview
Immune function represents the integrated activity of the immune system's cellular and molecular components to defend the host against infectious agents and malignant cells while maintaining self-tolerance. It is broadly divided into innate immunity, which provides rapid and non-specific responses, and adaptive immunity, which involves highly specific recognition of antigens and the formation of immunological memory (NIH, 2023). The proper execution of immune function involves complex signaling pathways, including the production of cytokines and the activation of various leukocyte subsets like T cells, B cells, and myeloid cells (Janeway et al., 2001). When immune function is impaired or misdirected, it leads to diseases ranging from chronic inflammation and autoimmunity to severe immunodeficiency and increased cancer risk (StatPearls, 2023). Because it encompasses thousands of distinct proteins and pathways, 'Immune function' is classified as a biological process or therapeutic category rather than a specific, druggable molecular target. Drug discovery efforts instead focus on modulating specific nodes within this system, such as TNF-alpha, JAK kinases, or PD-1 receptors, to achieve therapeutic effects (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2020).
Not applicable. Immune function is a broad physiological process and not a specific molecular target with a single mechanism of action.
