Overview

The immune inflammatory response is a complex, multi-step biological process characterized by the activation of immune cells and the secretion of molecular mediators to eliminate harmful stimuli and initiate tissue repair (StatPearls, 2023). It is a fundamental defense mechanism involving both innate and adaptive immunity, utilizing signaling molecules such as cytokines, chemokines, and eicosanoids (NIH, 2022). However, when this response becomes chronic or misdirected against self-tissues, it leads to the development of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2018). From a drug discovery perspective, the immune inflammatory response represents a broad physiological state or pathway rather than a specific, druggable molecular entity. Consequently, therapeutic strategies focus on inhibiting specific components within this cascade—such as Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), or Janus kinases (JAK)—to modulate the overall response. Therefore, while it is the focus of extensive clinical intervention, it is categorized as a biological process rather than a discrete therapeutic target.
