Immune Response

Overview

The immune response is the physiological process by which an organism detects and defends itself against harmful agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, toxins, and other foreign substances. It is a critical function of the immune system—a complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and molecules that work together to maintain health by identifying and eliminating threats. The immune response comprises two main branches: innate (nonspecific) and adaptive (acquired/specific) immunity, each with humoral and cellular components. Dysregulation can lead to autoimmunity or chronic inflammatory diseases. Special forms include allergies, graft rejection, and anti-tumor immunity. Inflammation is a hallmark feature.
