Immune status refers to the overall physiological state and functional capacity of an individual's immune system to mount an appropriate response to pathogens, foreign substances, or neoplastic cells (NIH NCI Thesaurus, 2024). It is not a single molecular target, such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather a composite assessment of the body's collective immunological defenses, including innate and adaptive components. The immune status determines an individual's susceptibility to infections and their ability to tolerate or reject grafts or tumors (StatPearls, 2023). In a pharmacological context, the term describes a patient's baseline or treatment-altered condition, which is a critical factor in the safety and efficacy of immunomodulatory therapies. While medications like checkpoint inhibitors or immunosuppressants significantly alter immune status, they do so by targeting specific nodes within the immune network rather than targeting 'immune status' as a discrete entity (PubMed: PMC7151817). Clinical monitoring of immune status is essential for managing patients with HIV, cancer, or those undergoing organ transplantation.
